Valley Morning Star All-Valley Softball

Mercedes standout Cadena leaves legacy of excellence

Mercedes' Jessy Cadena wanted to end her high school career on a high note.
No problem.
Cadena, whose name has graced the pages of the Valley Morning Star for the past four years, turned in another stellar season in her final campaign for the Lady Tigers.
For a solid year in the center circle and all-around great defensive play, Cadena has won her second consecutive Valley Morning Star All-Valley Defensive Player of the Year award.
"I think I played well," Cadena said. "Our team was really good this year. I don't think we would've been as successful as we were without my teammates' help."
Cadena had a 13-3 record (16 complete games) with a 2.06 ERA and 142 strikeouts. In the field, she had a slick glove at first base as her 60 putouts and only one error prove.
She was also named the 32-4A Defensive Most Valuable Player this season in addition to the case full of accolades she's received.
"I'm proud of what we did," she said. "It wasn't always just me. It was all of us. I'm really proud I was able to pull through for my team."
Offensive Player of the Year
Those Porter Cowgirls can definitely swing the bat.
And perhaps none better than sophomore catcher Rocio Valle, the -VMS Offensive Player of the Year.
Valles' numbers pop out faster than one of her home run blasts.
She batted .477, totaling 43 hits and six round-trippers in the middle of a hard-hitting Porter lineup.
"At the beginning of the season, she was playing hurt and not hitting that well," Porter coach Luis Guevara said. "But when she got better, she really starting hitting the ball."
At critical moments, Valle was clutch as Porter reclaimed the 32-5A championship.
"Against San Benito she came though and in the playoffs she was 6-for-10 with two home runs," Guevara said. "She tore it up."
Valley drew a huge amount of walks, as some teams opted to not try their luck against her. So needless to say, she commanded a lot of respect with a bat in her hand.
"I would just think ‘base hits'," Valle said of her mentality at the plate. "I just wanted to help my team. I want to thank my coaches, family and friends for all their support this year."
Newcomer of the Year
When things got tough, Lyford freshman pitcher Katrina Zamorano didn't panic.
She just played hard.
As injuries took their toll on the Lady Bulldog lineup, Zamorano stepped up in a big way, taking the pitching duties on her shoulders.
For her efforts, Zamorano is the VMS Newcomer of the Year.
The unanimous 31-3A first-team pitcher amassed a 7-7 record as a starter and also saw relief duty, totaling five saves. She also notched 103 strikeouts.
When the year started, she was part of a projected three-headed pitching attack for Lyford.
But when injuries reared its ugly head, Zamorano was called upon to help take Lyford back to the playoffs and she did just that.
"She lived up to our expectations and then some," Lyford coach Andy Peña said. "She came though for us and she never complained. Even when she was injured, she was adamant on wanting to play.
"Whatever we called upon her to do, she did it," Peña continued. "She's a great player who works real hard."
Pitcher of the Year
While she got some help from her teammates, Jennifer Garcia was the epicenter of the Harlingen Lady Cards' successful year.
In center circle, Garcia was time and again the glue that kept things together.
Perhaps, "Super Glue" would be more befitting for the VMS Pitcher of the Year.
Garcia went 19-9, racking up a whopping 261 strikeouts in 172 1/3 innings. She had four no-hitters and 17 complete games.
Additionally, Garcia had a scoreless streak of 32 1/3 innings during 31-5A league play. She also came through when it counted out-dueling PSJA North, Sharyland, Edinburg North and Raymondville.
"She's just unflappable and very consistent in the way she approaches the game," Harlingen coach Lance White said in April. "You just don't see if she's struggling or on top of her game. Her demeanor's the same."
The usually-reserved Garcia, who lets her play do the talking, has a no-nonsense approach.
"She doesn't get real high or real low out there," White said. "She's very professional and business-like. The pressure of the game doesn't seem to affect her all that much."
All-Valley first team
Leading the squad once again in center circle are La Joya's Aysha Soliz and Roxanne Rodriguez of PSJA North, two familiar names when you're talking cream of the crop players.
The catcher is Clara Navarro of La Joya, a recent West Point commit.
The infield is comprised of Itchy Sauceda of San Benito at first base, while fellow Lady 'Hound Blanche Treviño mans second.
Harlingen's Victoria Garza had a sensational season and is the third baseman, while La Joya's newest star, sophomore Clarisa Navarro, is at shortstop.
Mercedes do-it-all player Alyssa Martinez is the utility player for the second straight year.
Patrolling the outfield are San Benito's Sadie Sanchez, Mercedes' Alyssa Posadas and Liz Alvarez of Raymondville.
