Mercedes' Trevino sets Valley 200-mark, gets bronze
Comments 0 | Recommend 0AUSTIN - Meet the Rio Grande Valley's new fastest man. His name is Alex Trevino and shattered a 54-year-old Valley record in the 200-meter dash running a 20.86 at the UIL State Track and Field Championships on Friday at Mike Myers Stadium.
Bobby Morrow held the previous best time of 20.98, which he ran in 1954 for the San Benito Greyhounds.
Trevino finished in third place with a fully automated time of 21.10. But with the conversion equation designated by the UIL, .24 is subtracted from the fully automated time less than 200 meters.
All Valley records are hand-held times.
Trevino came close to breaking the mark at the District 32-4A meet last month when he ran a 20.99. That same night he broke the record in the 100 with a 10.23.
Two other Valley athletes also earned bronze medals with Raymondville's D.J. Rodriguez earning his medal in the Class 3A shot and Weslaco East's Robin Torres in the Class 4A 800.
