Harlingen South leads girls' selections; Brownsville schools top boys'

South's Pat Torres tops All-Valley girls team

Pat Torres had some big shoes to fill.
When she moved into central midfield for the Harlingen South Lady Hawks, the shadow of Lianah Flores could have dogged her every touch of the ball.
After all, how do you replace a three-time All-Valley MVP?
"I didn't want to imitate Lianah," said Torres, who was selected the MVP for 2008 Valley Morning Star All-Valley girls' soccer team. "I had to play in my own way."
Torres didn't imitate Flores, but she did make her own mark on the Lady Hawks as she helped lead them to another appearance in the regional semifinals.
The Hawks lost 2-1 to San Antonio Reagan, but played much of the game without Torres, who was injured and went off less than a minute into the match. With Torres and forwards Abby Saldivar, who missed the game as well, who knows?
Torres said she still hasn't watched a tape of the game.
South coach Omar Pedroza said Torres' loss really hurt and lauded her performance during her senior season.
"She plays the most difficult position," he said. "She controlled. She was under a lot of pressure. Everyone would always want to try and mark her. But, she has great vision and distributed the ball well."
Torres scored 10 goals on the season and had 25 assists and also was a physical and aggressive presence in the middle of the pitch for the Lady Hawks.
"It was a good season with a bad ending," said Torres, who will play at Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio next season.
South has been the dominant program in Valley girls' soccer for a long time and this season was no exception as the Lady Hawks romped through another unbeaten district season and outscored their opponents 18-1 in the first three rounds of the playoffs on the way to the regional tournament.
A big part of that was Saldivar, who scored 44 goals, before going down to an injury in the playoff game against McAllen.
"Abby is one of the best players I have ever had," said Pedroza. "She has a great ability to take the ball and take on defenders.
Saldivar is the Offensive Player of the Year of the Squad.
South sweeper Maddie Reyes, a cultured and elegant defender, is the Defensive Player of the Year.
"When she's back there, we're pretty secure, she's got a lot of knowledge of the game," Pedroza said.
South's Sarah Flores was also a very potent force up front and also notched more than 40 goals. Joining Flores, who was also in strong consideration for the Offensive Player of the Year, as the forwards on the squad are Katie Lipscomb from Edinburg North and Megan Ochoa from McAllen.
In midfield are South's Caitlin Fennegan, Rebeka Valentin of McAllen and Paige Gutierrez from Edinburg North.
The defenders are Bailey Sasser of Sharyland; Anisa Abrego of Edinburg North, Gabby Garcia of McAllen Memorial and Danielle Campos of McAllen.
The goalkeeper is Jordan Romero of Sharyland, who also was a strong candidate for Defensive Player of the Year.
The Newcomer of the Year is Harlingen South's Claudia Torres and the Coach of the Year is Robert Howell, who led the Hidalgo Lady Pirates to their first playoff performance.

Rivera's Alex Rios tops All-Valley boys team

When talking about boys soccer in the Rio Grande Valley, the first place to start is always Brownsville.
After all, the city has produced teams that have reached the state tournament for four of the past five years.
And while no Brownsville team earned a trip to the state tournament this season, it didn't mean the city didn't play a big role in Valley soccer this year.
Rivera forward Alex Rios has been a consistent goal scorer for the Raiders. He scored 17 goals in District 32-5A play as the Raiders captured the loop crown. He is the MVP for the 2008 VMS All-Valley boys' soccer team.
He will also play at the next level as he will attend Graceland University in Iowa.
"This is an opportunity for Alex to go to college through soccer, so it's great," Rivera boys soccer coach Salvador Garcia said. "As a coach, this is something you look forward to the most."
Graceland assistant coach Angel Monroy is looking forward to getting Rios on campus.
"Alex is a very strong player with a good reputation in the Valley," Monroy said in an interview the Brownsville Herald. "We've had good success recruiting players from this area in the past. We got to see a video of Alex and it was very impressive.
"We think that he can fit right into the program at the level we play," he added. "Hopefully, once we get him up there, he would actually make an impact, I think, even as a freshman."
Joining Rios as the superlatives for the team are Harlingen's Octavio Herrera, who is the Offensive Player of the Year; La Joya's Salvador Fraye, who is the Defensive Player of the Year and helped guide the Coyotes to the regional semifinals. Sergio Romero of Mission Veterans is the Newcomer of the Year.
Lopez's Amadeo Escandon is the Coach of the Year as he guided the Lobos to the regional semifinals.
Harlingen's Herrera didn't score a lot of goals, but his influence on the pitch was obvious to anybody who saw him play.
"He does all the little things well," said Harlingen coach Bobby Lucio.
Lucio said Herrera's work with the Under-17 U.S. National Team makes a big difference.
"He's an international player and he's like having a coach on the field, but he's not big-headed. He's got such vision."
One of Herrera's best attributes is his ability to take on defenders and beat them.
"He draws defenders to him, but he's not selfish. He's an international player and he plays some great balls," Lucio said.
The forwards on the first team are Mario Perez of Brownsville Porter; Ernesto Adriano of Economedes and Omar Mena, Valley View.
In midfield are Kendor Vasquez of Lopez; Fernando Mendoza of La Joya and Humberto Saenz of McAllen.
The back four are: Marco Vasquez of Brownsville Porter; Marco Guevara of Lopez; Julio Perez of Economedes and Harlingen's Julian Garcia.
The goalkeeper is Tony Lopez of Brownsville Rivera.
