PALM VALLEY - Entering the 2008 South Texas Junior Golf Classic, all the talk surrounded defending champion Adam Haley of Edinburg and 2006 champ Mission's Brandon Reyna.
And after the first round Saturday, Reyna looked in great shape to win his second STJGC title at Harlingen Country Club on Sunday.
But so did Brownsville's Matthew Cadriel.
Cadriel shot a 1-under par, 71 on Sunday for a two-day total of 141 and took home the boys' overall championship.
The top 10 was like a who's who of the Valley boys golfers.
Reyna finished second with a (70-74) 144. Haley was tied for eleventh with Harlingen's Roman Robledo and Corpus Christi's Ruben Jimenez with a 153.
Mission's J.P. Cordova and Weslaco's Kalen Vos were tied for third with a 147.
Ethan Cowart (McAllen) and Scott Stark (San Antonio) were fifth with a 149.
Lakota Lucio (Brownsville), Garrison Lackey (Weslaco) and Papito Gonzalez (McAllen) were tied for seventh with a 151.
Harlingen South's Anthony Milligan was 10 with a 152.
On the girls' side a new champion was guaranteed when two-time defending champ Felicia Espericueta didn't participate this year.
So defending District 32-5A champ Elizabeth Hovda took advantage and won the girls' title.
She needed two holes in a playoff on Sunday but she claimed her first STJGC championship beating out Edinburg's Jessica Tamen.
Tamen and Hovda were tied at 157 after regulation. Houston's Christina Cantu finished third with a 158.
