Pharr out of World Series after loss to Gurabo, Puerto Rico
LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Pharr Raiders’ run at the Colt World Series came to an end on Tuesday following an 8-3 loss to Gurabo, Puerto Rico.
The Raiders managed four hits and its offensive efforts were highlighted by Eric Gutierrez, who his a solo homer to left field in the fourth inning.
Puerto Rico led 3-2 after one inning, but it pulled away with a three run fifth and one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings.
Pharr finished 1-2 in the tournament and in third place in its four team group. Puerto Rico went 3-0 to win the group. The Raiders were making their first appearance in a World Series. They qualified after winning the South Region tournament in Marietta, Ga two weekends ago. They flew straight to Indiana from there.
“I’m proud of the boys,” Raiders coach Joe Barbosa said. “It’s been a long trip and we’ve been away from home for three weeks. This is something that they are going to remember for the rest of their lives.”
The tournament’s semifinals are today and the championship is scheduled for Thursday.
