32 apply to be next Sharyland head football coach
MISSION — If Sharyland ISD wants to hire a new Sharyland Rattlers head football coach from out of the Rio Grande Valley, it has an ample list of potential candidates.
Non-Valley coaches make up 20 of the 32 applicants vying to replace former coach Fred Sanchez. The Monitor received the list Friday after a request through the Texas Information Act was made. A request for the coaches’ résumés is pending.
Sanchez retired from coaching last month after 12 years on the job, leading the Rattlers to 40 wins and two District 30-5A championships over the last four years.
Sharyland athletic director Richard Thompson said there is a possibility that a coach will be hired by the school board’s next meeting Feb. 21. Thompson, though, stressed that the hiring process might take a little longer because the district just named Jesse Muñiz the temporary district head on Friday. Muñiz will likely be a part of the hiring process.
The question for Sharyland ISD is what direction it wants to take. The school district can replace Sanchez with one of three of his assistant coaches, a local coach or an out-of-Valley coach.
Sharyland ISD received an application as far away as California (Rolando Aguirre). Other non-Valley coaches to apply are Texas City coach Timothy Finn, who is 47-35 over the last eight seasons, and DeSoto offensive coordinator Todd Peterman. DeSoto averaged 46.2 points last season, and Peterman was on the coaching staff when the team went four-rounds deep in 2010.
San Antonio Northeast ISD coach Marcus Booker applied and was a finalist for the Brownsville Hanna opening and has also applied to be the coach at Brownsville Pace.
Rattlers assistants to apply were Ron Adame, who served as Sanchez’s top assistant in recent years, Rattlers defensive coordinator Rudy Gonzalez (former head coach at Brownsville Porter) and defensive assistant Tom Lee, who was 24-36 in six seasons as Mission High’s head coach before being reassigned in 2008.
Notable Valley names are former McAllen Rowe coach Gary Lauer, former Hidalgo and Rio Grande City coach Jorge Peña, who is now an assistant at PSJA Memorial, former Mission High standout and Mission Veterans assistant Lupe Rodriguez. Former La Feria and Brownsville Porter coach Roberto Valdez and recently reassigned Brownsville Hanna coach Tom Campos are also in the mix.
Monty Stumbaugh, who is one of the longest tenured coaches in the Valley at Port Isabel, also applied. Stumbaugh has been the Tarpons coach since 2001 and led Port Isabel to the Class 3A state semifinals in 2003.
