Santa Rosa opens season with a win over CC John Paul
SANTA ROSA --- The Santa Rosa Warriors had no problem beating the visiting Corpus Christi John Paul Centurions 28-7 Friday night in their season opener at Warrior Stadium.
A solid outing from the Warrior running backs along with the offensive line proved too much for the Centurions squad, which had a tough time on the offensive end getting a low eight first downs. The Warriors' Joshua Watrous and Robert Rodriguez combined for 158 rushing yards and each had two touchdowns in the win.
"We’ve been working our butts off in practice, and I think this win is an honor to our work," Watrous said. "I give all the credit to our line because they come out to play and it showed tonight."
Santa Rosa capitalized on Centurion mistakes all night, including a fumble on the Centurion’s 14-yard line that resulted wiht a 14 yard Warrior touchdown. Corpus Christi answered back in the beginning of the second quarter with a 66-yard Jose Trevino pass to Lynell Jones, cutting the Warriors' lead to eight (15-7) going into halftime.
That would be the only touchdown for the Centurions in the game while the Warriors rushed in two more touchdowns in the third and fourth quarter, including a Watron 20-yarder.
"Our kids stepped up to the challenge tonight and I’m real proud of them. Its always great when you start off the year with the win," Warrior coach Joshua Gonzalez said. "The offensive line along with the blocking backs was the key to the game. They did a good job creating holes and our backs did the same finding those holes."
Warriors quarterback Omar Ramirez rushed for 75 yards while throwing for 69 yards.
