Ogwumike’s double-double gives Cy-Fair Class 5A crown

AUSTIN — Nneka Ogwumike scored 17 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a dominating performance, sending Houston Cypress-Fairbanks to the Class 5A state title with a 50-33 victory over DeSoto.

Ogwumike, a senior McDonald’s All-American post, was a force on each end of the court with three blocks and seven steals to go with five assists in her final game. She has signed to play at Stanford.

Her sister, sophomore Chiney Ogwumike, added 10 points and five blocks for Cy-Fair (39-2).

The game was a matchup of two of the country’s top teams. Cy-Fair was ranked No. 6 by USA Today, and DeSoto (39-2) was No. 10.

Vanessa Obafemi scored nine points to lead DeSoto.

Class 4A

Dallas Lincoln 50, Dickinson 47: Two steals led to two quick layups in the final 35 seconds, lifting Dallas Lincoln in a wild finish.

Kimetria Hayden finished with 22 points and nine rebounds for Lincoln (29-4). Marissa Ashton scored 14 to lead Dickinson (35-5), which lost in the final for the second straight year.

Class 3A

Canyon 59, Kennedale 43: Jade Tinner scored 19 points, and Canyon (32-3) gave coach Joe Lombard his 1,000th career victory.

Lombard became the fifth girl’s coach nationally to reach the milestone, getting it with his 14th state championship in 30 seasons and sixth since 2000. Lombard’s career record is 1,000-92.

Destini Hughes scored 17 points for Kennedale (30-5).

Class 2A

Tuscola Jim Ned 65, Poth 49: Shelby Easterling scored 21 points and Tuscola Jim Ned raced to a big early lead and coasted past Poth.

Jim Ned (33-5) led 17-0 in the first quarter, attacking Poth with a defense that forced 27 turnovers.

Kasey Harlos scored 20 to lead Poth (27-8).

Class 1A, Division I

Martin’s Mill 48, Sudan 43: Jordan Barncastle, who has signed to play in college at Texas Tech, scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds, leading Martin’s Mill over Sudan after two straight years of losing in the semifinals.

Brittany Williams scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Sudan (34-5).

Class 1A, Division I

Follett 71, Kennard 51: Brittani Blau scored 27 points, leading Follett over Kennard.

Follett (31-2), tucked way up in the Northeastern corner of the Panhandle, traveled 560 miles to get to its first state tournament since 1973.

Felicia Skinner had 28 points for Kennard (31-6).
