Playoff Chase

Plenty of heated races as season slows down

With the season winding down, there are a few loose ends that need to be tied up with regard to the playoff picture.

>> District 30-5A: La Joya  (9-0) holds a 1 1/2-game lead over McAllen High (8-2) and a two-game lead over Sharyland (7-2) for the top spot in district, and the Coyotes need to win only one of their remaining three games to clinch at least a tie for the district title. The Rattlers and Bulldogs need a La Joya collapse. Two of the Coyotes' last three opponents are Sharyland and McAllen High. ... McAllen Rowe (4-5) needs to hold off Rio Grande City (3-6) for the fourth and final playoff spot.

>> District 31-5A: If Edinburg High beats PSJA High on Friday, the Bobcats win the outright district title. PSJA High and Edinburg North have both clinched playoff spots. PSJA North and PSJA Memorial are tied for the fourth and final playoff spot with Harlingen South only one  game out.

>> District 32-5A: Each team in 32-5A has at least two looses. Brownsville Porter (9-2) has clinched a playoff spot and is in first place in league but only by one game over Brownsville Lopez (8-3) and Weslaco High (8-3). ... Los Fresnos (7-4) is two games ahead of Brownsville Hanna and Brownsville Rivera, which are both 5-6.

"Our district has been competitive," Porter coach Tony Barbosa said. "Its good for us because it prepares us for when we start playing the teams from the northern Valley."

>> District 32-4A: Mission High stands on top of District 32-4A with a 9-1 record. ... The race for the final two playoff spots looks to be interesting. Roma (8-2), Mercedes (8-3) and Valley View (7-3) are all vying for a postseason spot. Valley View has the toughest road, having to play Roma and Mission to round out its season.

>> District 31-3A: Falfurrias(6-0) is in control of the league. Raymondville (2-3) and Lyford (2-3) are tied for the fina playoff spot.

>> District 32-3A: Hidalgo (5-2) and Rio Hondo (5-2) are tied for first in district.
