El Paso beats Lufkin 12-7
Comments 0 | Recommend 0AUSTIN - Cory Falvey slammed two home runs, including a fifth inning grand slam, to help Socorro defeat Lufkin 12-7 to become the first El Paso team in 60 years to win the UIL State Baseball Class 5A championship.
Socorro (35-4) tied the game Saturday at 2-2 on Falvey's fourth inning home run which also broke the El Paso city single season record of 17. The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the fifth inning leading 3-2. Falvey, who was named the championship game MVP, slammed the second pitch for the decisive grand slam. Falvey finished with six RBIs.
Jessi Ray Navarrette had three hits, including two doubles, for Socorro while pitcher Tavi Amparan (11-1) earned the win by allowing six hits in six innings.
Lufkin (30-10) scored four seventh inning runs and ended the game with the bases loaded.
El Paso Bowie won the first ever UIL state baseball championship in 1949.
