Lady Kats ready for revenge vs. Yoakum

Raymondville squares off with Lady Bulldogs

Valley Morning Star

CALALLEN - Revenge is al-ways a good motivational tool.
And going into this weekend, the Raymondville Lady Kats have a full arsenal of it.
Facing a Yoakum team that eliminated them in this round last year, Raymondville (20-10) looks to get even when they begin their Class 3A best-of-three regional quarterfinal series in Calallen tonight.
The winner of the series will take on either Medina Valley or Wimberley in next week's re-gional semifinals.
While advancing to the regional semis is the goal at hand, last year's sweep by Yoakum is fresh on the Lady Kats' minds.
"We're playing on that motiva-tion," Raymondville coach Pete Soria said. "We played a good game against them (Yoakum) last year before the errors started happening. So we know that if we stay focused, we've got a real good chance of beating them. "
The Lady Kats come off a hard-fought area round series last weekend against Cuero.
After dropping Game 1 4-3, Raymondville fought tooth and nail to win Games 2 (5-0) and the decisive Game 3 (2-1 in 9 innings) behind gutsy performances from pitcher Adriana Barron and a stout defense.
Now the group is ready to make school history. They're two wins away from making their first-ever appearance in the regional semis.
"The girls are very focused," So-ria said. "The seniors want to go out there and continue to just play softball."
Raymondville will face a Yoa-kum team that blanked Lyford in bi-district 10-0 last week, also in Calallen. As the 29-3A champ, they got a bye in the bi-district round.
Having that experience against the aggressive Lady Bulldogs will be a good thing, Soria said.
"I feel we match up with them," he said. "We have to stay focused and not commit silly mistakes. That's the biggest key (to winning)."
