Janes runs to winning TD for Raymondville against Kingsville
KINGSVILLE — Skylore Janes ran 20 yards for the winning score in overtime to give Raymondville (1-1) a 20-14 victory over the Kingsville Brahmas (0-2) at Javelina Stadium Friday.
The game was a scoreless standoff for the majority of the first two quarters.
Kingsville’s Demetre Richardson broke the scoring drought with a 3-yard run with 1:35 left in the first half; Luke Waddingham’s kick put the score at 7-0. Richardson’s score was set up - five plays prior - by a Luis Garza interception which gave Kingsville the ball at the Raymondville-28.
Raymondville made their own first break when a trio of Bearkats blocked a Kingsville punt which was recovered by Adulfo Vargas at the Brahma-7. Skylore Janes ran for the score on the very next play and David Medina’s extra point put the score 14-7 at 2:24 of the third quarter.
Donny Martinez intercepted a Kingsville pass, in the middle of the fourth quarter, and gave Raymondville possession at the Brahma-27, but the Bearkats turned the ball over on downs four plays later. Moreno would find Alex Montalvo for a 34-yard touchdown pass to tie the score 14-14 with 2:39 left in the game and neither team scored before going into overtime.
"We beat an awesome playoff team and our kids played with tremendous inspiration," Raymondville Head Coach Alex Leal said. "I can’t praise my guys enough as they played as good as the lord gave them the ability to play."
Kingsville Coach Andrew Hrncir will have the Labor Day weekend to ponder the what-ifs regarding Richardson who limped off the field in the third quarter and did not return.
"He went down and tried to continue to go but couldn’t," Hrncir said. "Our kids played hard all night long, we got some injuries and cramps but I am proud of our other guys who stepped up tonight."
