La Joya starts 2009 with win over Cigarroa
LA JOYA – La Joya put up a solid performance Friday night as the Coyotes defeated Laredo Cigarroa 28-12.
Both teams showed a lot of inexperience on both sides of the ball as both teams combined for four
turnovers and 14 penalties.
“We definitely showed our inexperience tonight and we will address this as we get started next week,” La Joya coach Leonel Casas said.
The game started as if were going to be a high scoring affair as Victor Leanos scampered 56 yards for a touchdown. The point after was good and La Hoya took a Quick 7-0 lead.
The Toros would have nothing to do with that as they took a 12-7 lead as Sergio Davila caught two touchdowns from quarterback Juan Ramirez. La Joya looked liked it would score as the half ended, but Leanos was intercepted in the end zone and the Toros took a knee to go to the locker room with a 12-7 lead.
In the third quarter Lorenzo Garcia got into the scoring as he snagged a 30-yard pass and bulled his way the final few yards by running over the defender. Garcia again scored on a 3-yard scamper and the Coyotes led 21-12.
After the Toros failed to move the ball, they punted to Lee Ramirez who took the ball 74 yards for a touchdown.
