Lobos beat Coyotes for first time in school history
LA JOYA — The La Joya Lobos held off crosstown rival La Joya High 57-43 on Friday at La Joya ISD Stadium.
Behind a strong performance by quarterback Javier Fermat, the Lobos (3-2 overall, 1-1 District 30-5A) won a game that the teams combine to score 100 points. Fermat rushed for 288 yards on 12 carries with almost half of the carries being touchdowns with five and added another through the air.
Wide receiver Juan Vasquez scored the touchdown reception for the Lobos.
During the first half, the teams scored TDs on every possession except for the last two when the Coyotes failed on a 33-yard field goal attempt with 5 seconds left. The Lobos ended the half on a Fremat 50-yard scamper.
The second half was a different defensive story for the Lobobs, who allowed only two TDs and held them on two fourth down attempts. They also had a key interception by Edgar Gonzalez.
Two Coyotes (1-4, 0-2) rushers eclipsed the 100-yard mark and fullback Lorenzo Garcia finished with three TDs.
Ricky Castillo added 109 yards and two TDs on 12 carries for the Lobos.
