Hanna girls, Los Fresnos boys win 32-5A titles

The Hanna Golden Eagles swimming and diving team was only able to defend one of its District 32-5A swimming and diving titles Saturday at the Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center.

The Hanna girls kept their crown by outscoring Los Fresnos 217-110, but the Falcons won the boys crown by winning the final race. They edged second-place finishers Rivera and Weslaco High 115-107, and fourth-place Hanna (97 points), which had only seven swimmers.

The top six finishers in each event advance to the regional meet.

"We brought home our first District 32-5A championship, and it means a lot to me," Los Fresnos coach Albino Cisneros said. "These guys have been working hard all season long, and it finally paid off."

The Falcons rallied from a two-point deficit heading into the final race thanks to the first-place finish of their 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:40.50), which consists of Armando Andrade, Edward Sanchez, Nick Davila and George Brown. They edged Rivera (3:43.25).

Brown added a win in the 100 freestyle (51.89).

"The teams was led by our senior, George Brown," Cisneros said. "He was very upset because he didn’t win the 50 free, he came in second, so we all knew that he was going to win the 100 freestyle. After that, they all came together and did what they needed to do."

Weslaco High was paced by Alvaro Lopez, who won the 200 individual medley (2:16.25) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.18), and David Sargent, who won the 50 freestyle (23.47) and the 100 backstroke (59.64). The Panthers also took the 200 medley (1:49.99) and the 200 freestyle (1:38.65) relay races.

Alberto Flores led Rivera, grabbing first in the 200 freestyle (1:55.00) and 500 freestyle (5:15.13) races.

"He did really good," coach Ryan Shea said. "He really hasn’t been focused on district, but he’s been training for the regional meet next weekend. So he’s been tired, he didn’t swim his best times today, so I’m kind of excited for next week because he has a good chance to go to state. He’ll be the first one to go to state in Rivera’s history."

On the girls side, Hanna swimmers won eight of the 11 events Saturday.

"I’m really happy with them," coach Caroline Rush said. "They did a really good job today, and I think a lot of kids stepped up that were on the cusp of qualifying, and the most important thing I’m proud of is that they dropped their best times. That, to me, was the goal going in, and they achieved that.

"That was the No. 1 thing we were going for, and the fact that we have a district championship on top of it makes it even better."

The Lady Eagles were led by Elva Saldaña, who won the 200 free (2:00.78) and 100 backstroke (1:02.92). Ayme Saldaña (100 free, 57.62), Karina Galvan (200 IM, 2:31.76), Natalie Castillo (500 free, 5:46.46), Brianna Morales (100 breaststroke, 1:16.96) and the 200 medley (2:08.07) and 200 freestyle (1:48.29) teams all won races.

Saldaña only competed in her two wins instead of competing in both those races and the relays.

"I think did a real good job," Rush said. "I think she can definitely go faster. She looked strong in the water. She’s been sick this week, so it’s nice to see her step up to the plate."

Pace’s Victoria Salinas also turned in a top effort, winning the 50 free (24.61) and 100 fly (1:04.82).

"She swam her lifetime best in the 50 free and she was a little slow in the 100 fly," coach Brian Wild said. "She’s a little tired right now, you know, she’s been working hard, so we’re really happy with the way she did."

Los Fresnos added a win in the 400 freestyle relay (4:11.24).
