Terry tallies third consecutive title

DONNA — If there’s one word to describe McAllen Memorial junior cross country standout Tricia Terry, it has to be confident.

Another might be champion as Terry took first place for the third straight year at the District 30-5A meet on Saturday morning.

“It was cold, that’s all I can say,” Terry said. “We’re not used to running in the cold weather, and this is our first time. It probably put a little damper on my time, but you know what, it’s a good change. I was just trying to finish. The faster you go, the faster you can get to the finish line and put on your warm-ups.”

Terry finished the two-mile race with a time of 11 minutes, 49 seconds. Winning the last two district meets by times of 11:35 and 11:50, Terry says that she knew she would perform well and instead was looking forward toward the regional next week.

Even with the standout performance by Terry, McAllen Memorial finished tied for fourth with 104 points. Sharyland successfully defended its girls title with 51 points.

“It was nice weather to run,” Sharyland coach Sandra Guerrero said. “The girls did well. Some of the girls didn’t run like I expected them to, but they still pulled up a win. It was OK for today, but it wasn’t one of their best races. If the girls run like the way they should be running, I think that we can get a top three finish (in the regional) and make it to state.”

Larissa De Leon led Sharyland, finishing third with a time of 12:24. Michelle Jaime (12:50.02) was 10th, Tania Fabian (12:50.69) 11th, Adriana Mercado (13:01) 13th and Alyssa Guzman (13:02) finished 14th, respectively.

McAllen Rowe was second in the girls standings with 78 points, while Rio Grande City finished third with 89. The top three teams and 10 individuals advance to the regional meet next week in San Antonio.

La Joya won the boys title with 43 points. The Coyotes finished the three-mile course with first-and second-place finishers Ivan Villanueva (15:49) and Oscar Garza (15:56).

“We’ve been working for this,” La Joya coach Joe Reyna said. “They peaked at the right time. We worked really hard all year and it paid off.”

Also for La Joya, H. Ibarra (16:34) finished ninth, Julio Ostos (16:58) 12th and Guillermo Reyes (17:14) 19th.

Rounding out the top three teams in the boys standings were Sharyland, which finished in second place with 57 points, and third-place Donna with 73 points.
