Eagles finish 10th at Regionals
Comments 0 | Recommend 0SAN ANTONIO-In any sport it's tough to go to someone's backyard and win.
And golf is no different.
The Hanna boys golf team shot a respectable two-day total of 637 to finish at 10th place 37 shots from qualifying for state at the Regional Golf Tournament at Pecan Valley Golf Course on Thursday afternoon.
Austin Westlake ran away with the tourney firing a 578 with while San Antonio Reagan posted a 600 total earning them a spot at state.
Golden Eagle coach Adrian Garcia said the team's lack of course familiarity hindered his team's scores higher than he would have expected from the reigning 32-5A District champions.
"The boys played well," coach Garcia said. "The biggest thing was course knowledge, it's hard keeping up with those other schools when they play the course weekly. Most of the guys had five or less rounds playing the course including this tournament."
Leading the way for Hanna was Matt Cadriel who shot 76-77 followed by Joseph Lucio's 81-77. Teammates Jason Saldivar fin-ished with a total of 157 (79-78) with Ben Borrayo posting a 169 and Justin Bennett 174.
Sharyland placed the highest from the Valley schools with finishing 6th with a 618.
The Rattler's Abraham Ancer earned a spot in the state tournament with a two over par 143.
Weslaco ended up in the middle of the pack shooting a 629 total for 8th while Harlingen South ended three shots behind Hanna for 11th.
"They've had a great year and we're going to miss Jason, Joseph and Justin," Garcia said. "This was a good experience for them and the younger guys."
Rivera Raiders Adam Vera and Sergio Hernandez played two fair rounds with Vera shooting back-to-back 83's while Hernandez shot 82-85.
Having a pair of Raiders in the Regional tournament was a first in Rivera history and with coach John Daniels retiring it couldn't have been a better ending for him.
"It was a great opportunity to come here last year (with Vera)," Daniels said. "It was much more sweet this year especially with my sophomore qualifying, I'm really happy for him.
"Having both of them play was a big treat for me, it was a special reward."
