Boys basketball notebook: Edinburg's run ended by Cardinals, Hawks
There’s a new top dog in 31-5A.
Actually there are two.
After a six-year reign as 31-5A champions, the Edinburg Bobcats were stripped of that title a few weeks ago when Harlingen South officially eliminated the Bobcats from the title hunt.
South went on to lose its final two games of the regular season, allowing the Harlingen Cardinals to creep back in the race.
A Big Red win on Tuesday gave both Harlingen schools a share of the 31-5A crown.
While the Cardinals and Hawks will enjoy their titles, Edinburg’s dynasty can’t be overlooked.
On top of the six league titles, the Runnin’ Bobcats only lost two district games in those six years boasting an 84-2 league mark. It’s only two losses were to Weslaco five years ago in Edinburg and at Harlingen High four years ago.
The Bobcats’ district record in the last seven years is an impressive 93-7.
THREE’S COMPANY: When the dust finally settled in District 32-5A, the picture still wasn’t too clear.
On paper, the Brownsville Porter Cowboys will be the No. 1 seed out of the district followed by Brownsville Hanna and then Weslaco.
But the three schools will share a district title following the Panthers and Eagles’ losses on Tuesday.
Porter gets the top seed considering it had better head-to-head and record. Hanna was next and then Weslaco.
Porter will now travel to Edinburg to take on the fourth-place Bobcats from 31-5A.
Hanna will host Edinburg North on Monday and Weslaco tangles with 31-5A co-champ Harlingen South. Time, date and place were not yet determined for that game.
COAST TO COAST: The Sharyland Rattlers bookended a banner season with No. 1 rankings.
The Rattlers won their first district title since the 2005-06 season and open the postseason with some momentum
Sharyland also holds the distinction of opening the season ranked No. 1 on the preseason poll and ending the regular season ranked tops in the Valley.
Rankings cease during the playoffs but a final Top 10 will be released with the postseason awards.
PERFECTION: For Santa Rosa senior Aaron Ramirez, being perfect was second nature.
In four years as a letterman, Ramirez never suffered a District 32-2A defeat winning 56 district games in his high school career.
In that same span, the Warriors won four straight outright league titles. Santa Rosa has won eight consecutive, including shared titles.
Ramirez was a freshman when the Warriors reached the Class 2A state tournament in 2009.
Tuesday’s win against Falfurrias also marked the Warriors’ 65th straight district win dating back to the 2007-08 season.
