Nominees for inaugural awards announced

Best of best to be honored at RGV banquet

HARLINGEN - Finalists for the first-ever RGV Sports Awards banquet were announced Saturday.
The awards ceremony/dinner will be held June 3 at Harlingen Country Club and is being presented by the Harlingen Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Valley Morning Star.
Awards will be handed out in six categories, as well as honoring All-Valley most valuable players in several sports during the 2007-2008 school year.
The nominees are as follows:
ATHLETE OF THE YEAR (MALE): Abel Aguirre, San Benito; J.D. Cisneros, La Villa; Mishak Rivas, Weslaco; Alex Treviño, Mercedes; Adam Vera, Bro. Rivera.
ATHLETE OF THE YEAR (FEMALE): Felicia Espericueta, Edinburg North; Kassandra Larios, Harlingen South; Laura Ochoa, Bro. Rivera; Bianca Torre, Harlingen South; Hannah Wolf, La Feria.
TEAM OF THE YEAR (BOYS): Edinburg basketball; Harlingen South football; Los Fresnos football; Rio Hondo football; Santa Rosa football.
TEAM OF THE YEAR (GIRLS): Harlingen South basketball; McHi basketball; San Benito track & field; Santa Rosa basketball; Sharyland golf.
ATHLETIC PROGRAM OF THE YEAR: Harlingen South; La Joya; Los Fresnos; McAllen High; Santa Rosa.
MOMENT OF THE YEAR: Harlingen South win over PSJA Memorial (football); Los Fresnos two-point conversion playoff win (football); Mishak Rivas breaks single-game rushing record (football); Ruben Vela scored 60 points in a game (basketball); Valley View earns first-ever varsity win (football).
OVERALL COACH OF THE YEAR: Scott Ford, Los Fresnos (football); Joshua Gonzalez, Santa Rosa (football); Steven Mendoza, Santa Rosa (baseball); Roy Swift, McAllen High (basketball); Lottie Zarate, Santa Rosa (girls' basketball).
As a sidenote, sports currently ongoing, including baseball and softball, will be considered for nominations upon the season's end.
