O'Connor ends Edinburg High's season, 6-1
ALICE — Edinburg High’s bid for an Elite 8 appearance fell short on Saturday as the Lady Bobcats lost to San Antonio O’Connor, 6-1, in Game 2 of their best-of-three Region IV-5A semifinal series. The win gives O’Connor a series sweep. The Lady Panthers defeated Edinburg High, 7-4, in Game 1 on Friday.
O’Connor (31-4) took a 3-0 lead after the first inning on its way to taking a 6-0 lead into the fourth inning. The Lady Panthers belted two home runs in ending Edinburg High’s season in the Sweet 16 round for the second straight year.
“They are the type of team that puts up big spots in innings,” Edinburg High coach Jesse Banda said. “They have good pitching, play good defense and can hit the ball.”
The Lady Bobcats (31-6) scored its run in the fourth inning when Dee Borrego scored on an infield single by Kassy Rodriguez.
Banda is optimistic about another successful season in 2012 because his team graduates one player. The Lady Bobcats were anchored by a talented junior class and had four sophomores and four freshmen on the roster.
“We have a junior ballclub,” Banda said. “We came out kind of slow, but once the playoffs started we got on a roll and that’s what you want — to be playing your best when the playoffs come around. That was good.”
