Bobcats begin district season with win over Wolverines
EDINBURG — Edinburg High Bobcats coach Joey Caceres will be able to rest well this week after his team held off a feisty PSJA Memorial team 24-14 in their District 31-5A opener.
“It feels real good to get that first district win and now I will able to get a good night’s sleep,” Caceres said. “We talked to the kids all week about coming out and getting this one under our belts. Our defense played real well tonight and came up with some big plays, as well as a huge defensive stop on a goal line stand.”
Edinburg (2-2, 1-0) got on the board first as Freddy Guajardo (10 carries, 80 yards, one TD) punched it in from 3 yards out, giving the Bobcats a 6-0 lead with 10:31 left in the first quarter. The touchdown was set up by a 42-yard pass from quarterback Isaac Escobar to Steve Treviño on the first play of the possession, giving Edinburg the ball deep in Wolverines’ territory.
But PSJA Memorial (2-2, 0-1) answered back as it took the lead 7-6 on a 12-yard touchdown run by Johnathan Gonzalez with 7:48 left in the first quarter. Gonzalez led all rushers on the night as he racked up 139 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns.
Guajardo scored his second touchdown of the night after her ran it on from 25-yards out to give the Bobcats the 14-7 lead with 11:52 left in the second quarter. Edinburg took a 17-7 lead into the half as Jaime Juarez nailed a 35-yard field goal with 1 second left in the second quarter.
PSJA Memorial cut the lead to 17-14 with 10:51 left in the fourth quarter as Gonzalez scampered 58-yards to the house for his second touchdown on the night. Edinburg attempted to go for a 30-yard field goal with just over five minutes left in the game, but the Wolverines blocked it and took over at their 20.
The Bobcats put the icing on the cake as they decided to go for it on a fourth-and-short with just under two minutes left in the game. It was worth the gamble as Jaime Sauceda scored on a 25-yard touchdown run for a 24-14 lead with 1:55 left in the contest. Sauceda led the Bobcats on the ground with 80 yards rushing on 11 totes.
The Bobcats tallied 320 yards of offense — 201 on the ground — and Memorial finished with 263 yards.
“In the first half, we threw the ball more and in the second half we pounded it on the ground,” said Caceres.
