EDCOUCH — In one of their most disappointing seasons, the Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets played for more than just a win Friday night at Yellowjacket Stadium.

Big plays from their defense along with clutch plays on the offensive side strung them a 21-14 win over the La Joya Juarez-Lincoln Huskies.

“I was just trying to prove that our kids know there’s a tradition here,” said E-E coach Joe Solis, whose team is 3-6 overall and 2-4 in District 32-4A. “We played with our hearts, and we kept our heads up. A lot of things happened to us in the season, but I feel its not the way you start but the way you finish and this is the way I wanted to finish,”

It was only a matter of time before E-E’s offense made something happen in the first half considering its stingy defense was putting them in threatening scoring positions. A forced fumble at the Huskies’ 3-yard set up Chris Trevino’s 3-yard TD run.

Two possessions later, Roger Garcia ran in an 8-yarder after punishing the Huskies’ defense for 51 yards during the 61-yard drive.

“(This) shows that the Yellowjackets don’t give up regardless of our record,” said Garcia, who had 108 yard and a touchdown on 12 carries. “We keep fighting until the end, showing how much heart we have.”

Juarez-Lincoln running back Jose Bocanegra made things interesting going into halftime exploding for a 49-yard run that cut the Yellowjackets lead to seven. Bocanegra ran his way to another 1,000-yard season with 131 yards and two touchdowns.

“We made a lot of mistakes in the first quarter,” said Bocanegra, whose team is now 4-5 and 2-4. “We gave them good field position, and they scored and took a good lead.”

Sophomore Abel Garcia scored a 26-yard touchdown on E-E’s first possession of the third quarter giving them a comfortable 14 point lead throughout the second half.
