Falcons stay perfect in 32-5A
Comments 0 | Recommend 0In an interview earlier in the week Los Fresnos Falcons coach Shawn Jones said every night someone different steps up for his ball club.
This time Falcons guards D.J. Perez and Jorge Mata combined for 36 points as Los Fresnos (12- 7,3-0) kept themselves undefeated in district and the Porter Cowboys (6-14,0-3) winless in a 59-44 victory at Porter gym Saturday night.
“It’s another big win,” Jones said. “Because anytime you play Porter at Porter they play us so tough. They matchup and Luis [Garza] does a great job and they are always ready to play us, but again it’s another huge win because every win in 32-5A is a tough one.”
Perez hit five 3-pointers including four in the first half boosting the Falcons lead to 31-26.
“Adrian is just a great shooter,” Jones said. “He’s a kid we tell to just keep shooting it, he make go 0-6 or 6-6. We’re going to let him keep shooting and we have confidence in all our kids to shoot the ball.”
In the start of the second half Mata opened up the third quarter with three consecutive baskets to push Los Fresnos to its biggest lead of the game at 39-28.
From that point in the game the Falcons went on a 9-2 run to shut the door on the Cowboys bid for its first district win.
Cowboys Coach Luis Garza contributed the loss to the team woe’s at the free throw line. The Cowboys missed a total 12 from behind the line.
“From our point of view we our averaging about 12 to 15 free throw misses per game and that’s the average of our losses. If we can’t make free throws, I don’t care if it’s a football game out here, we’re not going to win games.”
Porter post Jose Frausto lead the game in scoring with 20 points.
Jones reiterated that the Falcons team play is how it continues to win games and that it doesn’t matter who steps up on a particular night as long as someone does.
“We keep saying the MVP our team is our team,” Jone said. “Whoever the kid is that is going to step up and put us in a good position (to win), we’ll just roll with it.”
