Weslaco East rolls past Valley View to remain unbeaten
It was another day at the office for the Weslaco East Wildcats, scoring early and often to secure in route to a 42-0 victory to remain undefeated in District 32-4A play.
Weslaco East’s first score came by way of a 2-yard plunge by Bryan Guzman on its opening possession and the Wildcats never looked back. On the ensuing Valley View possession, the Tigers drove the ball to the Wildcat 1-yard line but an untimely fumble stifled what would be the closest that Valley View would get to the end zone.
Despite some spotty play on the offensive side of the ball early in the game, Weslaco East benefited by a pair of Colton Brownson interceptions returned for touchdowns which gave the Wildcats a 21-0 halftime lead.
“We played well enough to win,” Wildcats Armando Cuellar said. “They gave us a few things we had to adjust to early on but over all it was a great team effort, it was a great job by the coaching staff and I’m just happy we came out of this healthy.”
The Wildcats were led by stellar play of Guzman, who amassed 145 rushing yards on 14 attempts capped by two touchdown runs of 2 and 47 yards.
“I’m feeling good,” Guzman said. “Every game I think that football is fun and every time you do good you’re happy you were able to play that way. We’re 7-0 for the first time in school history but we played a little sloppy in the first half offensively. Fortunately we took control in the second and played East Football. We just want to stay focused and come out fired up and not flat out.”
Defensively, the Wildcats silenced the Tigers, holding them to just 157 yards and forcing five turnovers.
“Well those are the district leaders right there,” Tigers coach Tracey Hamilton said. “We’re still a young team but our kids always play hard until the end of the game. We need another offseason to let some of our guys mature and learn how to play four quarters.”
