Juarez-Lincoln varsity beats JV
LA JOYA — Prior to the final of the La Joya ISD Tournament, the one thing that was certain was a Huskies team was going to win the title.
The Juarez-Lincoln varsity and junior-varsity were both victorious in their respective semifinal matches. But it was the varsity that was able to pull off the 1-0 final victory at La Joya ISD Stadium, with Moises Morin scoring in the second half.
For coach and director of Huskies soccer Victor Ramos, this was a game he was going to be proud of no matter the outcome. Not only was he going to see his varsity perform but also the JV, from which he gets players for the playoffs.
“I’ve got three players that practice on the varsity,” he said. “The only reason I don’t put them on the team is because I want them to get playing time so they’re seasoned for the when I really need them.”
The first half of the game was one-sided but because of the JV’s defense the game stayed scoreless.
Six minutes into the second half the varsity scored the only goal of the game. Morin was able to get a kick of a ball that bounced off the JV goalie and easily found the back of the net. The JV got a chance to tie the game with about 10 minutes left on the clock with a free kick but a diving Samuel Mendoza was able to punch the ball out.
The JV would get the corner kick but fail to convert for the score.
When time expired, the varsity was the champion.
“The varsity had been playing very well and so had the junior-varsity,” Ramos said. “We were expecting a low-scoring game and that’s what we got.”
