Sharyland graduate Mowery enters HOF
Former Sharyland athlete Tim Mowery recently was inducted into the University of Dallas Sports Hall of Fame. He is a 1993 graduate of Sharyland where he served as captain of the Rattlers' tennis team all four years.
Mowery transferred to the University of Dallas in 1994 and immediately moved into the No. 1 position in singles and doubles. He set the season record for wins in a season with 16 and holds career records for singles wins (41), and winning percentage (.836). In doubles, he is the career leader in victories with 27.
Al Ogletree, former baseball coach at the University of Texas-Pan American, was inducted into the University of Dallas Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. Ogletree coached at Dallas, Sul Ross State and UTPA and produced 1,217 wins.
Basketball
Brownsville Hanna alum Robert Moreno (5-foot-6, 165 pounds) leads the American Southwest Conference in assists and steals. A starting guard at McMurry, he recently had a game-high 11 assists and four steals in a victory over the University of the Ozarks. Moreno is averaging 3.5 points per game while playing and average of 31.2 minutes per outing. McMurry will visit Texas Lutheran at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 19.
PSJA High's Ty Gough (6-10, 255) is pulling down an average of 5.0 rebounds and scoring 6.2 points per game for Texas State. The Bobcats play at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
La Joya graduate Adan Montalvo (5-11, 172) has been out of the starting lineup at Texas A&M-Kingsville. He last played back on Dec. 30. Montalvo had started all 11 games for the Javelinas, playing an average of 30.1 minutes while scoring 7.5 points and pulling down 2.4 rebounds. He was 15-of-38 (.421 percent) from 3-point range. Montalvo transferred to A&M-Kingsville from A&M-Corpus Christi.
Football
Robert Salinas (6-1, 239, junior) had his season at Arkansas cut short with an injury. The La Joya High graduate was back in the Valley during the holiday break. He is expected to bid for more playing time at linebacker this spring for the Razorbacks. Salinas started his collegiate career in 2006 at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind.
Track & Field
Two former Valley athletes are members of the Texas State Bobcats this fall. Kemuel Morales (sr.), who attended Brownsville Pace, competes in the throws. Morales earned All-Southland Conference honors in the shot put during the 2007 season. PSJA North's Jiovanna Martinez (soph.) also competes in the throws for the Lady Bobcats. Texas State will compete at the Leonard Hilton Memorial meet in Houston this weekend.
