UIL: Adding Conference 6A 'more likely than ever'

SAN ANTONIO — The University Interscholastic League is again floating the possibility of creating a Class 6A.

UIL Executive Director Charles Breithaupt said Monday “it's more likely now than ever” that the 1,200 high schools playing football in Texas might be realigned into six classes of roughly equal sizes.

Under the proposal, four schools from every district in every classification would make the playoffs. Class 5A and 4A districts are currently the only ones to advance four teams from each district.

Breithaupt said the proposal is one of several that school districts will be surveyed about this fall.

Breithaupt said the plan differs from previous calls to create a “superconference” of the 100 or so biggest high schools in the state.

Very interesting. I wonder how many 6a districts they can carve out in RGV?
So if four teams qualify for a one 6a district, then all four teams go to the playoffs. It's a win-win for all football programs, more teams from 6a-1a level will be going to the playoffs. I think its time to bring back B classification and or 6-man teams in RGV, so that there will be teams,e.g., from San Perlita, Sebastian, Combes, Primera, just to name a few. Of course, new high schools would have to be built. If you think 20- 25 years down the road, there will probably be high schools in the area of Combes and Primera.

I think most schools would stay at 5A here in the valley. 6A would be the next big school division, and by the looks of it no school would be big enough here in the valley with all the new high schools opening. Maybe just one would qualify for 6A but that would mean alot of distance traveling.

La Joya is kicking themselves. They could have been 6A and avoid opening up 2 new high schools like they wanted.

Any valley team in 6a would probably be at a huge disadvantage. For example, Judson was a huge 5a school before Wagner Hi was built. Judson was and has been a perennial power for the past 3 decades. Now Wagner has a very strong football program as does Judson. There is alot of talent around the Converse area. Harlingen could never get beyond Judson in the playoffs. So can you imagine if Judson were to become a 6a team and a Harlingen or Edinburg or La Joya team were to compete in 6a level with the likes of a Judson or a Wagner. Unless the talent pool has changed dramatically in the RGV, it's the same o same o.

As to qualify for 6a level: all that has to be done is readjust the enrollment level threshold without adding a single student. My take is if 6a is in the works, there has to be a good number of teams to qualify. If the RGV has 3 districts of 5a teams surely they can find a good 4 teams to make up a 6a district .

some day we'll have 7a , maybe all the way to 10a or even higher. its all about too many teams in 5a and 4a. the valley will have its 6a district, the largest 8 school districts for example. also this will throw some 4a's into 5a, 3a's into 4a, and so on. and it'll be more fair, like la feria and lyford, this 2 teams do not belong in the same district classification.
