Tamen tied for sixth after Day 1 at state
Jessica Tamen and Papito Gonzalez started strong, then went their separate ways.
Tamen shot a 2-over 74 and is tied for sixth place after Day 1 of the University Interscholastic League Class 5A Golf Tournament on Thursday at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.
Meanwhile, Gonzalez shot a 6-over 78 and is tied for 35th place.
"She had a really good day," Edinburg High coach Orlando Garza said of Tamen. "Everything was working for her, she was putting well."
Tamen enters today’s final round five shots back of Alexia Heist of El Paso Eastwood, who leads the field with a 3-under 69.
Key for Tamen, who started on the back nine, was limiting her mistakes early, as she had just three bogeys when heading into the turn. Then, after three pars, she birdied the par-5 fourth and the par-5 seventh before ending her round on a down note with a bogey on eight.
Still, heading into the final 18 holes of the season, she is in contention.
"Hoping for bigger and better things (today)," Garza said.
Gonzalez, though, had a different story.
The McAllen Memorial sophomore pared his first four holes before a string of bogeys set in, first on the fifth, then on the seventh, ninth and 11th. After things calmed down with three straight pars, he bogeyed the par-4 15th and double bogeyed the par-5 16th to put himself in a giant hole.
"He wasn’t hitting bad shots, (the puts) weren’t falling today," Memorial coach Celso Gonzales said. "It got away from him."
Gonzalez did rebound with a birdie on 17 and a par on 18 to head into the clubhouse on a high note. He now sits 10 shots back of Dallas Jesuit’s Jordan Spieth, who the leads the field with a 4-under 68.
"You can’t shoot a 78 and be in contention on the first day," Gonzales said. "I think he’s going to settle down, it was a long day for us. We’ll regroup, hopefully we’ll start (today) where we ended up (Thursday)."
Team wise, Mansfield leads the boys side with a 285, while Austin Westlake leads the girls with a 294.
Gonzalez will tee off at 8 a.m. today. Tamen will start her round at 8:10 a.m.
The tournament was delayed for more than five hours by inclement weather in the Austin area.
