Sharyland's Garza catches spotlight at Wichita State
Now in his third season at Wichita State, Sharyland graduate Dustin Garza (5-foot-11, junior) was named the Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week following his second-place performance at the Aldila Scenic City Invitational held in Chattanooga, Tenn. Garza tied his personal best score with a round of 67 to lead the Shockers to a third place team finish at the 16-team event played at the Council Fire Golf Club. He tied for second in the event with a final total of 205 (69-69-67).
Wichita State will compete at the Jim Colbert Invitational Sept. 22-23 at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kan.
CROSS COUNTY NEWS
Los Fresnos alum Alice Ross (5-6, freshman) is a member of the Graceland University squad this season. As a true freshman, Ross has competed in two meets this season. At the Maple Leaf Invitational hosted by Baker University, Ross placed 39th in the women's 4-K Run with a time of 17 minutes, 13.85 seconds, which was second overall among Graceland runners.
In her second meet at the Mule Run hosted by Central Missouri, Ross placed 66th (17:29.19).
The next meet is Sept. 20 at the Missouri Southern Stampede.
Zachery Quinones, a former McAllen High standout, is a member of the Texas Tech Red Raiders squad. Quinones, a senior for the Red Raiders, had a personal best time of 21:46 as a junior at the Buffalo Stampede. He competed at regionals as a junior and appeared in five events as a sophomore for the Red Raiders.
FOOTBALL NEWS
After his initial two games at Texas State, Weslaco High grad Mishak Rivas (5-7, 160) has carried the ball six times for 27 yards with his longest run being 9 yards. Rivas, a true freshman, also has one reception for 9 yards and one touchdown.
The Bobcats play at Northern Colorado on Sept. 20.
Homar Saenz (6-3, 250), a former Sharyland standout, has transferred from Sul Ross State to Tarleton State in Stephenville. Saenz caught 13 passes for the Lobos during his freshman season for 125 yards and one touchdown.
McAllen Memorial's Joseph Hanks, a freshman, is listed on the Lindenwood University roster. Hanks plays defensive end.
Sharyland's Michael Sanchez (6-2, 248), a redshirt freshman at Houston, plays on the offensive line. With the recent coaching change, Sanchez is listed as the third-team right guard. He was listed as a center as a true freshman.
VOLLEYBALL NEWS
Brownsville Rivera sisters Laura and Crystal Ochoa, both true freshmen, currently are playing at Henderson State in Arkadelphia, Ark., an NCAA Division II school. Laura has appeared in all six matches, while Crystal has played in three matches.
Laura has 21 kills to rank fourth on the team. She also had 11 digs and 13 blocks.
Two former Valley players are on the Navarro Junior College roster. Sharyland grad Alyssa Sanchez and Harlingen South grad Jessica Martinez are true freshmen for the Lady Dawgs. Navarro plays Wednesday at Temple in Corsicana.
