Bobcats earn playoff spot with win over winless Hawks
HARLINGEN — With a playoff spot on the line, the Edinburg Bobcats took care of business Friday night against the Harlingen South Hawks at Boggus Stadium, tallying a decisive 50-7 win.
The victory gained them entry into the “second season,” and head coach Joey Caceres could not be happier.
Or wetter, after some of his players doused him with the water keg as time expired.
“I didn’t expect it (the dousing),” he said. “I was kind of upset at first, but then I said, ‘you know, enjoy it.’ We’ve been working hard to get back to the playoffs for the last three years and it’s been tough for us, but we battled and we’re back to the top of the mountain.
“Of course, we’ve still got next week, a city rival, the (Edinburg North) Cougars. But things are going great right now. We’re so proud of the kids.”
The Bobcats dominated all night long, tallying 384 total yards on offense, and limiting the Hawks to 209 total yards (including an anemic 48 yards and one first down in the first half).
Edinburg’s Manny Men-chaca ran wide and all the way up the sideline for a 36-yard score in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Bobcats quarterback Steven Guerrero hooked up with Steve Trevino for 44 yards, which set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Luis Guajardo two plays later.
After Guerrero found Menchaca in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown pass with about a minute left in the half, it was 21-0, and the Hawks were in too big of a hole out of which to climb out of.
The Hawks hung in there valiantly in the second half, including a dazzling 42-yard pass-catch-and-run from quarterback Zach Flores to Shaylan Villarreal late in the third quarter.
But each Hawks drive in the fourth quarter ended in inter-ceptions, the last one as time expired.
