Sepulveda, Gonzalez alive for state titles
The Rio Grande Valley has two chances to claim a UIL state wrestling championship.
Both Mission Veterans Memorial senior Rudy Gonzalez and Grulla senior Samantha Sepulveda won their first two matches Friday at the Delco Center in Austin. To join McAllen High’s Sam Mangum and McAllen Rowe’s Sara Gonzalez as state champions from RGV high schools, Rudy Gonzalez and Sepulveda have to win two matches today.
Rudy Gonzalez, who switched to the 125-pound weight class earlier this season after coming down from 130, defeated J.T. Smith of Henderson 10-3 in the first round. In the quarterfinals, Gonzalez found himself down by four points late in the match but rallied to beat Dominic Yang of South Grand Prairie 10-8 to move on to the semifinals and improve to 26-0 overall and 16-0 at 125 pounds.
“I think that just talks about his dedication, not just mentally, but overall into his sport,” Mission Veterans coach Edric Pacheco said. “He never gave up. He knew exactly what he needed to do and just kept going into it. It worked out for him.”
To advance to the finals, he needs to beat Bo Nickal of Allen. Nickal advanced to the semifinals by pinning his two opponents in less than eight minutes combined.
“We just need to take it six minutes at a time (today),” Pacheco said.
Sepulveda also continued her standout season with a pair of wins Friday. In her first matchup, she breezed past Taylor Alva of Cy-Woods 14-1. Her quarterfinal victory was just as impressive, as she pinned Rebecca Medina of Del Valle in just 1:43. To reach the finals, Sepulveda has to beat Darlene Fernandez of Hanks.
After winning twice on Friday, Sepulveda improved to 40-0 on the season.
