Fired coach sees no need to apologize

The Associated Press

DALLAS - The high school coach who was fired after his girls basketball team won a game 100-0 says he feels no need to apologize because he ``did everything the right way.''

Micah Grimes, fired days after The Covenant School of Dallas made national headlines with the controversial victory over Dallas Academy in January, told ESPN in his first televised interview that he took ``precautions'' when he realized the inferiority of the opponent.

``It was obvious that ... we were playing a team that was, I should say, they were talented in a sense, but they were not basketball players,'' he said. ``And, after I noticed that, we just pulled back and played a zone for the remainder of the game.''

Asked if scoring 100 points was a goal, he replied: ``No. Never. No way. Absolutely not.''

The game became a subject of national debate and resulted in officials at The Covenant School issuing a public apology. Grimes, who did not teach or work at the school, was fired when he posted a message on a youth basketball Web site saying he disagreed with the apology.

ESPN's interview with Grimes is to be aired Sunday on the program ``Outside the Lines.''
