Huskies, Tigers rule day at 32-4A meet

MERCEDES — La Joya Juarez-Lincoln and Mercedes ruled both the boys’ and girls’ divisions at the District 32-4A cross country meet at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Showgrounds in Mercedes on Saturday morning.

On the girls’ side, Mercedes finished in first place followed by Mission Veterans in second and Juarez-Lincoln in third as all three teams punched their tickets to the regional meet in San Antonio next week.

Meanwhile on the boys’ side, Juarez-Lincoln took home the district title followed by Mercedes in second and Valley View in third place.

Marissa Mata, who came in second place with a time of 11 minutes, 58 seconds, paced Mercedes on the girls’ side. Mata will be joined at regionals by teammates Teresa Sova, who finished fifth with a time of 12:43, and Alyssa de Leon, who came in sixth.

Emily Perez, who won the race with a time of 11:21, paced Juarez-Lincoln. She’ll be joined at regionals by teammate Aide Salvador, who came in ninth with a time of 12:59.

The top 10 individuals and top three teams qualify for regional competition.

On the boys’ side, Juarez-Lincoln was led by Joel Garcia, who finished in second with a time of 14:47, and Jesus Macias, who came in fifth at 15:10.

Juan Torres, who finished fourth, Francisco Turrubiartes, who came in sixth, and Pedro Izaguirre, who came in 10th, paced Mercedes.

Jose Delgado of Valley View won the boys individual title with a time of 14:27.

The Mission Veterans Lady Patriots were led to their second-place finish on the girls’ side by Kristina Cantu, who came in third, and Andrea Leal, who finished eighth.

Hidalgo, who came in fourth on the girls’ side and just missed out on sending a team to regionals, still qualified two individuals. Sarahi Casas finished in fourth and Alexis Frias grabbed the final regional spot by coming in 10th.

On the boys’ side, Weslaco East just missed out on sending a team to regionals by finishing in fourth. However, Jose Martinez qualified for a trip to the Alamo City by coming in third with a time of 14:49.
