Meyer shines in Sharyland win
McALLEN — Apparently, McAllen Rowe isn’t the only team with questions at quarterback.
Sharyland decided its best chance to win Saturday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium was with Scottie Meyer at quarterback.
Meyer replaced Bobby Moran in the Rattlers’ 52-17 win over Rowe (2-2, 0-1 District 30-5A) and shined in the role, at least on the ground.
“It was something that I needed to step in and it worked out,” Meyer said, adding he felt comfortable under center.
Rattlers coach Fred Sanchez, whose team improves to 4-0 and 1-0 in league, said Moran was sick last week and he decided to give Meyer, who was the second-string QB, more practice time and like what he saw.
Sanchez also said it is too early to tell which QB he will go with the rest of the season or if he will mix them both in there.
Meyer did not throw the ball very much. In fact, he was only 2-for-10 passing for 12 yards. As a ball carrier, though, Meyer rushed for 278 yards and five touchdowns, including TD runs of 85 and 67 yards.
The rest of the team mustered only 139 yards of total offense and scored two TDs on a 92-yard Gus Cantu fumble recovery and return for a TD and an 87-yard kickoff return by Chris Zuniga.
“I expected to have a big game every night,” Meyer said. “A couple times I scored when I didn’t expect to score.”
It was Meyer’s best game since his sophomore season. Last year, he dealt with injuries.
“Scottie has been a great leader this season,” Sanchez said. “He is coming off a difficult season. He is not a real boisterous leader but he stepped it up when we needed him to. I’m real proud of him.”
Meyer entered the game leading the Rattlers and the district in receptions with 15. Warriors coach Gary Lauer said he was surprised to see Meyer as the signal caller but was well-aware of Meyer’s speed.
“(Meyer) is a hell of an athlete,” Lauer said. “That is what I told him when he came over.”
Meyer’s 31-yard TD run gave the Rattlers a 43-10 lead with 6:22 left in the third quarter, and the Rattlers cruised the rest of the way.
