Santa Rosa loses heartbreaker to Hebbronville
SANTA ROSA — After Joshua Watrous scored from three yards out on the Warriors’ first possession, Santa Rosa looked well on its way to a big district win. But that would be their only score. It almost was enough, but the Warriors came up short against the Hebbronville Longhorns, 8-7, Friday night at Warriors Stadium.
The loss drops Santa Rosa (4-4 overall, 2-1 district) to second in District 32-2A while the Longhorns (5-3, 3-0) take sole possession of first. Hebbronville's offense couldn’t get much going throughout most of the first half, courtesy of an impressive Santa Rosa defense, which consistently stopped the Longhorns during crucial moments.
But the Warrior offense couldn't take advantage, and struggled after their first drive.
With 5:36 left in the first half, a herd of eager Longhorn defenders tackled Watrous for a safety. Then, on the
Warriors’ next possession, Watrous fumbled on the Santa Rosa 17-yard line. Five plays later, Theryn Martin ran it in for a score from two yards out. A somber Santa Rosa head coach, Joshua Gonzalez, summed it up well:
"Our defense had a special game tonight, and did what it took to give us a chance to win the game offensively, but unfortunately our offense sputtered. After that (first drive), we just lost momentum. We just couldn't get things together. But my hats off to our defense."
