RGV ROUNDUP: Garza finishes off career with Javelinas
Comments 0 | Recommend 0In 11 games this season at Texas A&M-Kingsville, Brownsville Porter's Billy Garza (6-foot-1, 235 pounds) set single-season records in completions and attempts. A transfer from Illinois, Garza also established the passing yards mark as well with his 389-yard, four-touchdown performance against Angelo State in the season finale.
He finished his one season with a school-record 2,787 yards. His 23 touchdowns was one away from tying the school record. Garza replaced Abel Gonzalez of Rio Grande City as the single-season leader, a mark that stood for seven years. A&M-Kingsville concluded the season with at 7-4 overall and 6-3 in the Lone Star Conference.
Christian Brom (5-7, 150), a teammate of Garza's at A&M-Kingsville, concluded his second year place-kicking for the Javelinas, going 7-of-10 in field goal attempts and was 32-of-33 in extra-point attempts.
The McAllen High graduate also averaged 54.1 yards on 38 kickoff attempts with five touchbacks.
Another McHi graduate has helped Mary Hardin-Baylor back into the NCAA Division III playoffs for the fifth straight season and sixth time in the last seven years. Josh Saenz (5-11, 185) plays quarterback for the Crusaders, who improved to 9-1 overall and 8-0 in American Southwest Conference play with a 42-20 victory over Sul Ross State. The Cru clinched their fourth straight outright ASC title.
Basketball
Jaret von Rosenberg (6-2, 185), a senior at Hartford, was named the America East Player of the Game after scoring 10 points and dishing out six assists in a 63-62 loss to Quinnipiac. A Sharyland graduate, Von Rosenberg played 36 minutes for the Hawks.
Hartford travels to play Penn State at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Recovering from an ankle injury that kept him out during the preseason, A&M-Kingsville guard Adan Montalvo (5-11, 172), who played at La Joya High and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before ending up at his current college last year, scored six points, dished out three assists and pulled down three rebounds in an 83-64 loss to the Islanders. The Javelinas open their season tonight against Texas A&M-International.
Golf
Sharyland's Dustin Garza (5-11), a junior at Wichita State, is ranked ninth in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin performance index men's NCAA Division I ratings. Garza had an overall scoring average of 68.81 after five events this fall. The Shockers begin their spring schedule Feb. 16 at the Oak Hills Classic hosted by Texas-San Antonio.
Rugby
McAllen High alum Annie Jones is in her second season on the Women's Rugby Club at Dartmouth. A sophomore, Jones is playing lock and flanker this fall. She scored two points in a victory over Norwich University and produced six points in a game against Harvard.
