McHi in striking range at boys tournament
McALLEN — Rio Grande Valley favorites took a backseat to McAllen High on Wednesday at the Region IV-5A tournament at Palm View Golf Course.
After shooting a 312 during the opening round, McHi is a surprising second and is in position to advance to the state tournament next month. The top two teams advance to state and the top two individuals, not members of the first- and second-place squads, also move on.
McHi has not had much recent success and Greg Kiger said in his eight years as coach none of his teams or individual golfers have reached the state tournament.
“I’m happy the kids were able to come out to the regional tournament and shoot the scores that they did,” Kiger said. “We have shot better than that. For the first day, we will take it.”
San Antonio Reagan leads the tournament with a 305 and San Antonio Churchill (320) is third, eight shots behind McHi.
The Bulldogs’ Chris Martinez shot a 1-over 73 and is tied with Reagan’s Tyler Bumpass for the tournament lead.
Martinez, who started on No. 10, bogeyed his opening hole but settled down, adding that the real pressure will be today’s final round. Martinez and the Bulldogs will need a similar performance or better today if they want to advance.
“I just wanted to get at least in contention or close to it,” Martinez said. “I want to shoot a number (today) and hopefully that is good enough to get me to state.”
Other locals in contention to advance as individuals are Weslaco’s Kalen Vos (75) and McAllen Memorial’s Papito Gonzalez (74), who is one shot behind the lead. Gonzalez could easily be leading the tournament if not for three penalties assessed for finding water on three occasions.
“That is where all the marbles are,” Gonzalez said about today’s final round. “It also supposed to be really windy (today). It is going to change the whole course.”
Harlingen South’s Roman Robledo, who qualified for state last season, struggled to an 83 as did Weslaco High’s top golfer Garrison Lackey.
