Rain and cold welcome 2012 track season
SAN BENITO — Depending on the weather, the 2012 track and field season could get under way today.
And the San Benito Greyhounds are hosting the year’s first meet.
Recent rainfall has already claimed the field events at the 5th Annual Bobby Morrow Relays.
Lady Greyhounds head coach Danny De La Rosa said all field events were cancelled for today’s meet
He said all running events will go on as scheduled.
“Depending on how wet it is, we might not run the hurdles,” De La Rosa said. “But I think we should be OK.”
The Morrow Relays will be conducted in AAU style and all running events are final.
Three schools have already scratched their teams but the meet still boasts a solid field of boys and girls teams.
Most of District 32-5A will be represented with five Brownsville schools (Pace, Hanna, Veterans, Lopez and Rivera), Weslaco and Los Fresnos taking part in the competition.
Harlingen and Harlingen South will also be in San Benito.
For the Cardinals, senior hurdler Randy Bermea, who recently signed with the University of California, is looking forward to running both hurdles.
Bermea broke Valley records in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles last year. He returns for his final highly anticipated season.
Bermea ran a 13.62 at the Meet of Champions and a 36.46 in the 300 at the state meet. Both are Valley records now.
“It’s my last year so I’m really excited to go out there and go out with a bang my last year,” Bermea said. “It’s going to be hard to pick up where I left off but I’ll compare it to my first meet from last year and go from there.”
Weslaco East, Roma, Mercedes and Edcouch-Elsa will represent 32-4A and TAPPS’ Brownsville St. Joseph’s is always competitive with the public schools.
Donna will only take its girls team.
“It’s always nice to start the season at home,” De La Rosa said. “The kids are anxious to run. They’ve been running for a month. Now it’s time to shake off the rust and get going.”
On Saturday, PSJA North will host the Winter Relays.
The meet will take place at PSJA North High School due to renovations being made to PSJA Stadium.
Running events are scheduled to start at 2:30 in Pharr.
