Raymondville cruises past Progreso
PROGRESO --- On a muggy humid night, the Ramondville Bearkats clawed their way to victory over the Progreso Red Ants 37-21 in both teams' District 32-3A opener on Friday night at Red Ant Stadium.
Raymondville’s defense did not allow one of the Valley’s top rushing offenses to get into rythem as they held Joe Garza and Armando Pintor to under 150 combined yards and a touchdown.
“It’s hard slowing down a tandum like that,” Raymondville coach Alex Leal said.
"They got some athletes on that team. We’re just glad to slow them down that much.”
Raymondville jumped out to an early 6-0 lead late in the first quarter after quarterback Bo Moreno hit Skylore Janes for a 22-yard touchdown. In the middle of the second quarter Gabriel Munoz fumbled the football for the Red Ants deep in Progreso territory and the Bearkats drove the length of the field to go up 12-0 off of a 1-yard touchdown run from B.J. Flores. After a field goal and a pick six from D.J. Quiroga, the Bearkats led 22-0 at halftime.
As the Bearkats had a host of players run the ball, B.J. Flores helped orchestrate the rushing attack and led the team with 162 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries. Skylore Janes and Ricardo Villgomez each had 85 yards receiving and one touchdown apeice for Raymondville.
