Pharr set to face powerhouse League City
PHARR — As well as Pharr Post 101 played in its opener Wednesday, it will probably have to do better tonight.
Defending Texas American Legion state baseball champion League City routed Houston Madison 14-0 in seven innings for a convincing victory. League City, which beat Texarkana to win the state championship last season, will face Pharr at 7 tonight.
The winner will clinch a spot in the tournament final, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday. The winner of tonight’s Pharr-League City game will have the chance to wrap up the title with a win Saturday night.
Thursday’s rout follows a pattern of dominance for League City in the state tournament. Last season on its way to a title, League City won its three games by a whopping combined score of 69-20. In the championship against Texarkana last year, League City won 28-10.
Actually, League City’s 14 runs scored Thursday were four less than its lowest total in any game at last season’s state tournament.
And its next opponent is Pharr, which beat Texarkana 14-4 in seven innings on Wednesday night.

Texarkana plays Houston Madison at 10 a.m. today and will play the loser of the Pharr-League City game at 10 a.m. Saturday. The winner of the Saturday morning game will have to beat the winner of tonight’s Pharr-League City game twice to clinch the title.
