Cougars run past Hawks behind QB Muñoz
EDINBURG — Edinburg North quarterback Matthew Munoz was the man Friday night as he accounted for 353 total yards and six touchdowns, leading the Cougars to a 56-7 win over Harlingen South at Cats Stadium in Edinburg.
Munoz threw for 271 yards and five touchdown passes and ran for 82 yards and a touchdown run as well.
With the win, the Cougars keep their playoff hopes alive as they improve to 3-2 in District 31-5A and 5-3 overall.
Harlingen South falls to 0-5 in district play and 0-8 overall.
“Matthew is a player and can make things happen,” said Edinburg North head coach Roy Garza. “He is an athlete and we are fortunate to have him.”
Edinburg North put together a nice drive as they marched 80 yards downfield on five plays, which eventually led to a 21-yard touchdown run by quarterback Matthew Munoz, giving the Cougars the early 7-0 lead with 2:55 left in the first quarter. The touchdown was set-up by a 31-yard pass from Munoz to Juan Ramirez.
After electing to go for it on fourth and 10, the Cougars converted as they scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Munoz to Jomar Vasquez with 6:19 left in the second quarter.
Munoz threw his second touchdown pass of the night as he hooked up with Jordan Quiroz on a 20-yard touchdown strike, extending the Cougars lead to 21-0 with 5:45 left in the first half.
But the Hawks worked some magic as they drove the ball downfield 76 yards in 25 seconds and finally got on the board as quarterback Steven Remmenga hit Dillon Dawi on a 22-yard touchdown pass, cutting the lead to 21-7 as time expired.
Edinburg North stretched its lead to 28-7 as Vasquez scored his second touchdown of the night, a 53-yard strike from Munoz with 7:26 left in the third quarter.
Munoz continued to electrify the crowd as he tossed his fourth touchdown of the night, a 34-yard pass to Andrew Partida as the Cougars continued to pour it on 35-7 with 6:00 left in the third quarter.
Edinburg North put the nail in the coffin when backup quarterback Michael Pacheco ran it in from one-yard out, extending the lead to 42-7 with 5:22 left in the third quarter.
