Cardinals face tall order in Falls City
BANQUETE — Don’t tell the La Villa Cardinals how good Falls City is.
The Beavers (10-0) are state-ranked by the Associated Press and have steamrolled the competition along the way.
The Cards (5-5) know this. But they also know that’s why they play the game, which will be at Bulldog Stadium in Banquete tonight.
“It’s David against Goliath,” La Villa head coach Eugene Garza said. “But we’ve been on the opposite end before where we were ranked and an unranked team beat us (Flatonia in 2007). So we tell the kids that anything and everything can happen. They (Falls City) haven’t won this game yet.”
The Beavers are a run-oriented team that has muscled past its opponents.
“They’re pretty good running that veer offense,” Garza said.
But a common opponent has La Villa feeling good.
“We watched the tape of them against Bruni,” Garza said. “And Bruni matched up well with them, and we matched up well with Bruni. So we feel a lot more confident playing Falls City.”
For La Villa, the quartet of Ricky Cantu, A.J. Garza, Roger Perez and Tony Contreras will each be relied upon to lend a hand in possible upset.
“We’re gonna try to use all of our strengths,” Garza said.
