MISSION — As Sharyland coach Fred Sanchez received his Gatorade bath he knew a few things: he and his squad just clinched their first outright district championship as a Class 5A school, they did it by winning every game and that up next for them is Laredo Alexander in the bi-district playoffs.

The Rattlers overpowered the La Joya Palmview Lobos 61-21 on Friday night as Alexander scouts watched from the stands.

“It’s a very memorable moment and the kids played very good,” Sanchez said of the team’s performance. “It feels great. The Kids played well all the way around.”

The Rattlers were led by quarterback Scottie Meyer. He finished the game with 11 rushing attempts for 209 yards and three touchdowns. Meyer was also 5-for-10 passing for 149 yards, one touchdown and an interception. The Rattlers put up 559 yards of total offense.

Lobos running back Carlos Siller marked 27 attempts for 197 yards and two touchdowns. The Lobos put up 277 yards of total offense.

The last time Sharyland finished the regular season undefeated was in 1989 as a Class 3A squad.

“That certainly was one of my goals as a coach,” Sanchez said of the perfect record. “It’s an awesome feeling and to go 10-0, it’s not often that it happens, and you know this is a special team and they accomplished that.”

Up next for the Rattlers is will be Laredo Alexander at home in Sharyland next weekend. Sanchez and his coaching staff are looking forward for the match-up.

“You know they did what they had to do to win,” Sanchez said. “They’re a spread offense and a 4-3 defense so it’s going to be a great atmosphere here in the playoffs.”
