Mercedes finishes strong
LA JOYA - The Tigers ended their season on a six-game winning streak with a convincing 48-20 victory over the Juarez-Lincoln Huskies. Mercedes coach Michael Uribe said quarterback Albert Chavez was “tight” before the game and held him out until the second quarter. Chavez then played all of the second and half of the third for the Tigers.
Despite not winning the district championship, Uribe still was proud of his team, which finished a strong second to Mission High.
“One of our major goals was the district championship and we missed that one so we’re a little disappointed in that but we’re proud that we went 6-1 in district,” Uribe said. “I told our guys that’s not bad for a team that was predicted middle of the pack.”
The Tigers (7-3, 6-1) travel to face Tuloso-Midway in the bi-district round next Saturday night. Juarez-Lincoln ends its second season 4-6 overall and 2-5 in district play.
