PSJA Memorial holds off Harlingen South for first district win
HARLINGEN — One thing was for sure Friday night at Boggus Stadium: Either PSJA Memorial or Harlingen South was going to get their first district win. Well, PSJA Memorial was the lucky one as they defeated the Hawks 28-12 in a District 31-5A contest.
With the win, the Wolverines improved to 1-3 in district play and 3-4 overall while South fell to 0-4 and 0-7 overall.
PSJA Memorial drew first blood as quarterback Louie Gonzalez hooked up with Gilbert Gutierrez on a 61-yard touchdown strike on their first play from scrimmage, giving them a 7-0 lead with 11:09 left in the first quarter.
But Harlingen South cut the lead to 7-3 as Joaquin Garcia nailed a 27-yard field goal with 4:57 left in the first quarter.
Garcia tacked on his second field goal of the night as he connected on a 24-yarder as the Hawks trimmed the lead to 7-6 with 11:03 left in the second quarter.
The Wolverines extended their lead to 14-6 as running back Mike Fonseca scored on an 80-yard draw play with 1:22 left in the second quarter. Fonseca scored his second touchdown of the night as he ran it in from 39-yards out, giving PSJA Memorial a 21-6 lead with 10:57 left in the third quarter.
However, South cut the deficit 21-12 as quarterback Zach Flores found Andrew Maynard all alone in the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown pass with 7:08 left in the fourth quarter.
PSJA Memorial put the nail in the coffin as Gonzalez hooked up with Gutierrez for the second time on the night, a 6-yarder giving the Wolverines a commanding 28-12 lead with 3:44 left in the contest.
