Los Fresnos' playoff run ends in regional semifinals
The Los Fresnos Lady Falcons' season came to an end in a 25-12, 25-15, 25-14 loss to San Antonio Johnson in the Region IV-5A semifinals at St. Mary's University in San Antonio.
The Lady Falcons, who advanced to the regional tournament for the first time in school history at the Class 5A level, never quite got their game going and fell in straight sets to the powerful and state-ranked Lady Jaguars.
"We didn't play our game tonight," Los Fresnos coach Becky Woods said. "Our defense really wasn't there. You know what, that team was good. They had some good hitters, they hit the ball to the floor."
The Lady Falcons were in the second game for the first 25 points or so, matching the Lady Jaguars point for point, before things got away from them.
"I'm proud of the girls, we made it this far," Woods said. "Our kids had an awesome season. I had five great seniors and they've (been) just unbelievable leaders this year and I'm going to miss them."
A bulk of this Los Fresnos team, which beat Harlingen South on Tuesday in the regional quarterfinals to get to this point, are sophomores and freshmen. So the fact that they played in this game and against this kind of opponent can only help.
"The experience for my younger kids, that is the one thing," Woods said. "I got a lot of young kids.
"They know what the level of play has to be like," Woods added. "When you get to this point, you have to pick it up to the next level."
Woods was also very thankful for the fan support up in San Antonio, as a ton of Falcons fans made the trip up north for this game.
"I want to thank all the fans and the entire community," she said. "We had an awesome crowd here tonight."
