SHERMAN - A former Canton coach who was shot in 2005 by the father of an athlete has been hired as head football coach in Sherman.

Gary Joe Kinne led Clovis West, Calif., High School to a 10-3 record.

Sherman school district trustees on Tuesday night voted to hire Kinne. Terms of the one-year deal were not released.

The 42-year-old Kinne replaces Drew Young, who was 37-29 in six seasons in Sherman.

Kinne in April 2005 was critically wounded in a campus shooting in Canton.

Jeff Doyal Robertson was sentenced to 20 years in prison for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Kinne spent two seasons as an assistant at Baylor. He is the father of Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne, who transferred from Texas.

Sherman is 60 miles north of Dallas.
