STUNNING TIGERS

PHARR — The Mission High Lady Eagles couldn’t seal the deal as the Valley View Lady Tigers pulled off an amazing, five-set, come-from-behind victory in a classic District 32-4A battle Saturday.

Valley View defeated Mission High 22-25, 20-25, 26-24, 27-25, 15-11.

In the first game, both teams came out ready to play as they kept the score close throughout the match.

In the end Victoria Rojas scored the last kill to put the game away 22-25.

Mission High (15-7, 3-2) came out strong in the second game, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. Rojas led the offensive charge but the Lady Tigers pulled to within two points late in the game. But the Lady Eagles played strong defense and put the Lady Tigers away 20-25.

But Valley View (9-6, 2-3) did not give up easily and they began a rally to put some spark in its play to begin the rally in a a shocking upset.

“The game is not over ’til the last point is scored,” Mission High coach Letty Ibarra said. “That is the one thing we are still struggling with is putting the game away.”

There was no surprise as both teams came out firing and ready to play the third game. Carolina Vera led the Lady Tigers’ offensive assault.

But Rojas, a defensive specialist, was up for the challenge by taking on Vera in the front on the net.

In the end, Vera simply overmatched Rojas and the Lady Eagles won the game 26-24.

“I played my best and the team played extremely well,” Vera said. “We’re getting better as the season goes along.”

The third game was all the momentum Valley View needed as it defeated Mission 27-24 and 15-11 in the last two games to pull off the win.

“I thought they performed really well,” Valley View coach Cindy Viesca said. “Being down 0-2, our team showed great character.”
