Favila: The King not worthy of the hype he's been given

LeBron James may be known as "The King," but the way he went about announcing his move to the Miami Heat was akin to that of a court jester. Not since Michael Jordan hung up his basketball shoes have I seen an NBA athlete hog the limelight like James did the past few weeks. The thing is, Jordan deserved the attention, James, on the other hand, proved he is just an immature millionaire only interested in personal glory and ESPN highlights. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not dogging the guy for leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was a free agent and had every right to change teams. I know Cavs fans feel betrayed and resent his decision, but James felt moving to Miami was what he needed to do to and that’s that. Also, I’m not denying the guy’s athletic abilities or character. James is an extremely gifted basketball star who manages to stay out of trouble off the court. No easy task considering he’s only 26 years old and has more money than anyone that age should. Still, despite all James’ talent, he has yet to really accomplish anything. He’s only been to the NBA Finals once where the Cavs were swept by the Spurs in the 2007 Finals. Since then he’s failed to lead a team back to the Finals despite playing on Cavs teams that had some pretty solid talent behind him. Yes he’s a two-time league MVP and was a scoring champ after the 2007-08 season, but in professional sports individual titles mean little compared to winning team titles. I’m positive James would trade both MVP awards and all his individual accolades for just one Larry O’Brien Trophy. And while his move to Miami may indeed one day prove to be fruitful, until that day comes James needs to learn some humility and realize that his place in basketball history is a paragraph alongside the volumes that have been written about the greats that have come before him. It was simply not necessary for James to treat his decision to leave Cleveland like a three-ring circus. The theatrics were juvenile and, quite frankly, a dumb move because he is not worthy of such praise. At least, not yet. Personally his theatrics have me rooting for him to fail miserably. I don’t wish the young man harm or injury, but if he goes the rest of his career without ever winning an NBA championship, that would suit me just fine. We were all witnesses this past week. Witnesses to stupidity. Dave Favila is senior sportswriter for Valley Freedom Newspapers. He can be reached at davidf@valleystar.com or at 956-430-6214
