West Oso slips past Port Isabel
WEST OSO - The Tarpons recovered a punt in the end zone for an early touchdown, but West Oso came out strong in the second half to earn the victory.
C.J. Barrera made the recovery for a 7-0 lead during the first quarter, a lead that held up at halftime as neither team scored during the second quarter.
"We had a couple of chances to score in the first half and we just didn’t get it done," P.I. coach Monty Stumbaugh said. "We didn’t execute on offense in the first half and that hurt us."
West Oso rallied in the third quarter with two touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead heading into the fourth, and the Bears tacked on another TD but missed the extra point to take a 20-7 edge.
Port Isabel’s offense then got on the board as quarterback Kyle DeMoss found Blake Sapp on a TD pass, but the Bears added another TD, again missing the extra point but still leading 26-14.
De Moss then found Laurence Gonzalez on another TD pass, but the Tarpons missed the extra point.
"Our kids played extremely hard," Stumbaugh said. "I was proud of our effort. We feel like we’re going to be all right.
"We’ve got some things to correct, but we think by time district rolls around we’ll be OK."
Port Isabel next plays Valley View at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 4 at Port Isabel.
